I will be teaching my students the Arizona State Standards. Below is an overview of what they will be learning throughout the academic school year. 

 
English Language Arts Standards
 

Reading Standards for Literature

ï‚· Read purposefully and actively

ï‚· Ask and answer key questions about a text, such as who, what, when, where, why and how

ï‚· Retell stories, focusing on the main idea

ï‚· Use key details to describe the characters, setting and major events in a story

ï‚· Identify who is narrating the story

 

Reading Standards for Informational Text

ï‚· Ask and answer questions about the world around them

ï‚· Retell key details of an informational text, focusing on the main idea

ï‚· Use the illustrations in a text to help explain its main idea

ï‚· Identify and use text features such as headings, tables, glossaries and icons

ï‚· Identify reasons an author gives to support an idea

 

Reading Standards Foundational Skills

ï‚· Recognize and orally manipulate sounds

ï‚· Blend sounds to read written words with accuracy and fluency

ï‚· Read and recognize sight words, word endings, and different kinds of syllable types

ï‚· Read with purpose and understanding

 

Writing Standards

ï‚· Write opinion and explanatory pieces, supplying reasons to support ideas

ï‚· Write stories with sequenced events and details that indicate what happened in the story

ï‚· Participate in shared research projects

ï‚· Recall information from experience or learning to answer a question

ï‚· Explore digital tools for effective communication

ï‚· Generate ideas for writing from reading stories, poems, and informational texts

ï‚· Make connections across content areas into the world around them

 

Writing Foundations Standards

ï‚· Write all manuscript letters to communicate ideas

ï‚· Use correct spelling for words allowing others to understand written work

ï‚· Correctly spell frequently used words

ï‚· Apply phonetic knowledge when writing

 

Speaking and Listening Standards

ï‚· Listen actively

ï‚· Participate in discussions with peers and adults

ï‚· Ask and answer questions about texts and presentations to clarify understanding

ï‚· Integrate reading skills to present ideas, thoughts, and feelings in a variety of ways

 

Language Standards

ï‚· Use a variety of nouns, verbs, and adjectives to express ideas

ï‚· Produce and build on complete sentences

ï‚· Capitalize dates and names of people

 

Mathematics Standards

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

Add and subtract within 10.

Work with addition and subtraction equations.

​

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

Extend the counting sequence. Understand place value.

Use place value understanding and properties to add and subtract.

​

Measurement and Data (MD)

Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units.

Work with time and money.

Represent and interpret data.

​

Geometry (G)

Reason with shapes and their attributes.
